Winding north from the Chugach Mountains to the Glen Highway, it is the most popular roadside attraction between Anchorage and Glenallen. About 10,000 years ago, the Matanuska Glacier began to retreat to its present position, and has not changed significantly in nearly two decades. It is ideal for glacier hiking as it tends to be sunnier than the surrounding area in winter.
